Class Notes: This course provides an overview of essential principles for assessing language development, as well as issues regarding assessment, accountability, and equity for English Language Learners. Topics we will cover in this course include but are not limited to: commonly used assessment tools; how assessment supports differentiated instruction; how content and language goals shape assessment; strategies for monitoring English language learners’ progress with respect to a given standard; designing assessments and rubrics; inclusive assessment practices; reliability, validity, and washback of language tests; cultural and linguistic biases of tests; and assessment practices with respect to students of diverse backgrounds. We will especially consider how to make assessment practices fair, transparent, equitable, and supportive of all students, particularly those from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Many students take this course concurrently with ENG 445.
