Class Notes: This graduate level elective course examines theories and applications of critical literacy for social transformation by considering foundational questions such as, “What is ‘truth’? How is it presented and represented, by whom, and in whose interests? Who should have access to which images and words, texts and discourses? For what purposes?” (Luke, 2012). In particular, the course focuses on critical literacy in educational scholarship from the fields of English education and literacy to examine how teachers and students have enacted and extended critical literacy in the 21st century.
