Students will develop foundational skills in financial literacy, project budgeting, income diversification, and entrepreneurial thinking - tools essential for supporting a long-term artistic practice. Emphasis is placed on realistic planning, adaptable career pathways, and the practical realities of balancing creative goals with financial responsibilities. Class Notes: Special Topics: Explorations in Audio This course offers a broad, hands-on exploration of sound and music technologies, blending creative practice, science, and culture. Students will study the physics of sound, acoustics, and hearing; the design and function of microphones, speakers, and other transducers; and fundamentals of recording, mixing, and live sound reinforcement. We will investigate music theory, instruments, and performance practices, with attention to differences in rhythm, tuning, and timbre found in various cultures. The course also introduces digital audio workstations, MIDI, and synthesis, along with contemporary applications such as spatial and immersive audio. Through listening, lab activities, and creative projects, students will gain practical experience while developing an appreciation of both the technological foundations and cultural dimensions of sound. Prior technical or musical background is helpful but not required.
